A program called Covax wants to distribute Covid-19 vaccines fairly. Is it working?

Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO

Early in the Covid-19 pandemic, many of the world’s richest countries poured money into the race for a vaccine. Billions of dollars, from programs like the US’s Operation Warp Speed, funded development that brought us multiple Covid-19 vaccines in record time. But it also determined where those vaccines would go. Before vaccine doses had even hit the market, places like the US and the UK had bought up nearly the entire supply.

This turns out to be an old story. In nearly every modern global health crisis, from smallpox to malaria to H1N1, rich countries have bought up vital medical supplies, making poor countries wait sometimes decades for life-saving support. It’s effectively a system in which where you live determines whether you live or die of a preventable disease. Leaving a disease like Covid-19 to spread unchecked in some places also gives it a chance to mutate -- and variants of the virus are already raising alarms. So: how do we get vaccines to countries that can’t afford them?

One solution underway is called Covax. It’s a program co-led by the World Health Organization; Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance; and the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). Its goal is to get vaccines to lower- and middle-income countries at the same time as rich countries. So how is it supposed to do that? And will it be enough?

So if we give the vaccines to poorer countries, then the epidemic won't be prolonged? What logic is that? There's only a fixed supply of vaccines and regardless who we give it to, someone has to wait.

Nobody in the developed world CARES if the rest of the world get vaccinated or not. I'm from America and I would rather have the USA sell them to make a profit, THEN boost our military to God tier levels. We all have a far greater threat: China. We won the trade war with them and they will BOW to us.

Obviously I would want my family and close relatives to be vaccinated first if I have poured money in developing the vaccine. Even tough I am from a poor country and we desperately need a lot more vaccines than we have, I don't think there is anything wrong with securing maximum vaccines for your own people. Totally understandable. Hoarding while not getting vaccinated by choice or simply holding poorer countries hostage, like military bases in exchange for vaccines is another matter altogether.

But that is how capitalism works. Who has more money buys more vaccines In the end many of those vaccines were sold or sent for free to the poorer countries. And thr poorer countries still dont do a very good job with what they have

You cannot have an equal distribution without equal contribution. You contribute more, you get more; you contribute less, you get less; and if you contribute none, you don't get anything. It will always be that way. In a class, a company, a cooperation, a country, there is always a hierarchy. There must be someone cleaning the toilette.

Which countries provided the majority of funding for research and development of vaccines for covid 19? Which countries contributed the majority of money to COVAX so poor countries can get vaccines? How much money did your own country provide for this GLOBAL effort run by WHO under UN? Any idea? Remember, over 90% of the money came from the citizens of those countries in the form of tax. These so called rich countries will be sending you close to a billion of free vaccine to you soon. Hopefully corruption and incompetence in your own country do not slow down the distribution to the people who need the most. If you are living there, I am sure you already know. Don't buy into this s**t trying to to blame, divide the world. If you want to blame , look at the real source of of this pandemic and that country is doing very well now. I am currently living in a "middle class" country waiting for my first shot. I will be lucky if I get one by the end of this year and I absolutely refuse to accept any remedy from the same people who caused the poisoning.

For me, the real answer for the q on "how are rich countries are prolonging the pandemic" is the politics. "Poor countries' " vaccines like Russian, Chinese or Indian have almost no access to the healthcare system of western-backed countries. More/less independent countries like Hungary, Argentina or Serbia have a long list of vaccines from around the world providing their people vax-list to choose from.

Wealthy countries with their export bans, refusals to share technology and to waive intellectual property in favour of profits over lives, and active demonization of flu tries like Russia and China distributing vaccines has definitely made the pandemic longer. It's not that vaccines wouldn't have been possible without the west, although there would be less variety and less production, it's that the west is actively trying to monopolize vaccine production and distribution

America was the one that was keeping raw materials from elsewhere and keeping a surplus of vaccines they would never use. The selling price of the American vaccines was kept high as well. So while media such as American ones want to pretend it was a load of countries fault, not really. Also poorer countries like Brazil and India have not been quick at identifying variants and examining them. They have also let the virus spread out of control with no concern even for their own populations.

The point is that this video is not pointing out the differences between the 2 countries. India has vaccinated entire population of USA and still hasn't finished baccinating 1/4 of the the country. The challenges put upnin front of India are way harder than what's in front of USA. Over the top, USA had a failed health ecosystem of wuhan virus in the first wave itself and that lasted pretty long. Whilst 2nd wave was shortlived but intense in India. The video seems to have been made will ill intent or shortage of logical on ground knowledge.

The problem is these western media outlets still consider India poor, whereas the country has executed the most number of doses to its population in the world... What creates problem is 1.3bn population of India to be covered. But that doesnt mean you will show one sided picture in terms of number of doses India is leading the vaccination...
Erik

Using absolute numbers isnt usefull at all, as in most cases. The important statistic is vaccinations per citizen because for exampel most western european countries could vaccinate theur population in the double digit range with the amount india needs.

This is just common sense. If you have more money to invest in the manufacturing of the vaccines obviously you'll be first in line when they're approved. The COVAX idea is good but that's only if richer countries also go that route. I'm not sure they will when they know they can be offered more doses via a bi-lateral deal. Let's not forget we would have no vaccine right now if it weren't for the billions invested by the richer countries.
