How Taiwan held off Covid-19, until it didn't

Another pandemic will come. Here’s what we can learn from Taiwan’s efforts to fight this one.

In December 2019, Taiwan‘s government learned that at least seven atypical pneumonia cases had been reported in Wuhan, China. Because of Taiwan’s proximity to China and the number of flights back and forth, it was expected to have the second-highest number of Covid-19 cases worldwide.

Instead, Taiwan has had one of the lowest Covid-19 death rates in the world. Thanks in part to a sophisticated digitized health care system and a mandatory two-week quarantine for all travelers, life in Taiwan went on with relative normalcy. But then, in May 2021, a new wave of cases complicated the country’s success.

So how did Taiwan, the ninth-most densely populated nation in the world, avoid a more severe spread of a highly contagious virus for so long? And what lessons can be learned from their response to the outbreak?

Correction: We omitted a credit to our Taipei-based producer, Clarissa Wei.

Well, all back to normal as it was, except for Taipei. I guess it was 1~1.5 month of self-meditation (quarantine). Still could shop out and go out. But I can finally dine out and enjoy the cinemas again. Woot!

It feels bad when mainland China did the exact same to contain the virus while the western media never say anything good about it. As if it is not part of the world. Reports on mainland China would be like " Mandatory qurantine? Violation of human rights!"

Nah, its the Taiwan government that rejected the vaccines from the CCP. Because they dont trust the vaccine, their media tells their people the CCP vaccines are useless. It is more than vaccines, it's politics.

The reason Taiwan slipped was because they relaxed the Manara Tory quarantine for pilots. Despite the mistakes, within 2 months Taiwan has managed to contain the outbreak. So it seems for now.

The biggest obstacle to Taiwan's vaccination process is, sadly still due to one of its biggest rivals, China. The Chinese government has been constantly blocking business deals of vaccine companies with Taiwan like BioNTech, which results in the US regularly sending military aircraft to deliver their own vaccines to Taiwan. They are still honestly not enough for the 23 million population in the country, and can hinder the end of the pandemic in Taiwan for quite some time.

That would be ideal, but the complicated relations white the ccp won’t allow that. Cause that would mean that Taiwan has to be recognized as an independent country from China, which of course China doesn’t like.

That’s normal over there? In the end ,few deaths but they had to join the real reality and lockdown. Low Risk people had to buy 2 weeks of masks ? low risk people where probably Asymptomatic and we’re already spreading the virus from across the ocean. I live in the states and being fully vaccinated with all my friends, we feel normal but now the unvaccinated people are now in there own pandemic. I had Covid-19 symptoms in January 2020 , lived through it without a vaccine or kits, so I was ok to get the pandemic shots. Taiwan you did a good work👍 , always wait 4 years without letting down your guard 💂‍♀️. So if Taiwan was back to normal do they still need the vaccines is my question🤷‍♂️? Just a thought🤔, now that they have double the cases all of a sudden as expressed in the video. Wow.

quarantine is common sense, although the definition states it should be 40 days, i think if everyone had followed a 40 day quarantine, we would have been better off, just unfortunate that so many people refuse to slow down or delay plans to be smart about a serious situation

@R Chen but there are still countries having lots of vaccines more than their actual needs...aren't they selfish?! i don't think so. Or maybe you are just making excuses for the incompetent dpp? Since life is the first and foremost human right, it doesn't make any sense to call it selfish.

You are leaving out nature. Taiwan is close enough to the Equator that the season the flu spreads is the monsoon season ( as opposed to winter in more temperate areas). Taiwan's 2020 monsoon season didn't come ( causing a draught). Nature is a big factor in how contact tracing can work.

To be honest this sounds way too similar to how China handled the pandemic after the cases stopped increasing, with the phone tracking, health monitoring( on basically an ID card). Taiwan’s Healthcare is great, agree wholeheartedly, but this video is purposefully edited to sound like Taiwan came up with this idea first, which it didn’t
