How centuries of division built one of the most unequal countries on earth.

For decades, South Africa was under apartheid: a series of laws that divided people by race. Then, in the 1990s, those laws were dismantled. But many of the barriers they created continue to divide South Africans by skin color - which in turn determines their quality of life, access to jobs, and wealth. Racial division was built into the fabric of cities throughout South Africa, and it still hasn't been uprooted.
That's partly because, while apartheid was the culmination of South Africa's racial divisions, it wasn't the beginning of them. That story starts closer to the 1800s, when the British built a network of railroads that transformed the region's economy into one that excluded most Black people -- and then made that exclusion the law.

Just a fact check; by the time the Dutch colonists moved to the interior, slavery had been abolished. The indigenous populations have never been enslaved. The Dutch colonists themselves had a fair number of former Cape Colony slaves in their ranks and families. Sometimes the facts don't fit well with the intended narrative, but don't let that spoil a good tale....

Nolies Truesbob

Please just get your facts right. No bantu tribe in South Africa was ever inslaved by the Dutch or the British. In fact the Dutch arrived in 1652 and the Dutch settlers only moved north east in the early 1800's. They lived in South Africa for 150 years before they had contact with the black tribes. Buy that time slavery has ended. In fact the British and Dutch importate slaves from Malaysia and India. Why would they do that if they had all these black people to use as slaves? Apply some common sense.

What is actually wrong with Blacks and Whites having their own areas? Jews, Gypsies, Sikhs, Chinese and other groups all set up their own little communities and nobody goes and says "hey you guys better be integrated or thats systemic racism". It's only when it comes to Blacks and Whites everyone is obsessed with constantly picking at it and usually making racial tensions worse. Try to help the Black population out of poverty by all means but don't force integration. If people wanted it they'd already be doing it!

I've been to Capetown and toured these areas. It's sad what the legacy of Racism and Apartheid has wrought. There must be a transfer of land and money back to the blacks & colored from the whites. The govt must give land in the city to black ppl. It's the only way to build the wealth that was denied them.
AnotherHistoryEnthusiast 2 घंटे पहले
It happened in other countries already. And the resoults are not the best. Corrupt leaders appeared and used the money to build their own "empire". The people remained poor, while a small group got very rich. The same with the lands. Black oligarchs got them all, and the common people did not profit from them. You can't just give money and land to someone, because chances are that it will get into their heads and they will become the abusers of their own people instead of the previous ones. That can only work with a society that has experience with keeping it's leaders in bay, but unfortunately most African societies are not like that. As you can heard in this video, the only way out is education. You should give the opportunity, not the achnivement.

It is unfortunate that this video does not mention a reality that still existed when I lived there in the late 70's and early 80"s. While the rest is certainly history, one of the major triggers for apartheid and segregation was to suppress the inter-tribal violence that was so significant that different tribes had different buses, and different business buildings were served by one tribe but not another, and their staff hours were staggered so that they would not meet and fight on the streets while awaiting their buses. The home we occupied was a residence that had housed a number of German diplomats. Across the road was one occupied by the Japanese. Our gardeners would routinely be in conflict with theirs. If buses were late, or if they were late for the bus, it was not uncommon for them to come to work beaten (and be tended by our maid (who lived in)). It was plainly evident to us as kids when we'd be playing in the trees to see this violence play out on the streets - simple thuggery by one group over another, and while close to the bus stop they had safety in numbers, as they dispersed to the property compound, they'd be harassed. So this inter tribal violence was a very real problem apartheid dealt with, and I am certain saved lives.

You don't see people coming down on Jews and Gypsies for not integrating with each other or how do we make Chinatowns and Indian reservations integrate together. It's only with Blacks and Whites where these self righteous do gooders are always busy bodying themselves trying to force integration where it's not wanted.

truth be told, black areas are predominantly black because no white will move into these areas, which leaves the traditional white areas, which are slowly being integrated by those who can afford to live there. 30 years ago, it was illegal for the different races to live in each other's 'areas', not so today. 70 years ago, many black or non white residents had entire suburbs and towns stolen from them and were moved into areas/towns built just for them with poor whites being given access to that land property. Sophiatown for example became Triomf (Afrikaans for Triumph). Blacks were then moved to Soweto. Same for Indian communities, removed from Johannesburg and moved to Lenasia, Colored/mixed race moved to Eldorado park. These consolidations and removal of people enlarged many metropolitan areas into large white areas with no black suburbs at all. Huge black cities were then developed on the outskirts of the white towns. Much of this segregation remains today.

But white people didn't want to work together. White capital held on to economic power (you can imagine the "trickle down" fantasies that was their idea of sharing wealth). Culturally, white people never en masse faced up to the horrors of apartheid, it was far more "I didn't support it myself", "I didn't know". And now the opportunity for building trust (i.e. the TRC) is gone.

Apartheid government built tiny houses with inadequate infrastructure, definitely not electricity water plumbing paved roads etc to every house. After 1994, the ANC government continued to build houses where communities have already formed, but service delivery is so poor in some places, there is still no water plumbing paved roads etc (the whole country doesn't have electricity). I couldn't work out what houses built in what period the video is referring to.

It’s sad that Vox argued this point without double checking their facts. They also didn’t address their own question , Why is RSA still so segregated? Many countries around the world suffer the same dilemma. The segregation is rich vs poor. To bring race into it is a indication of one’s inability to objectively dissect the problem . More people of color are living in “better” areas compared to white citizens. Keep in mind that white citizens make up less than 7% of the population. So even in Vox’s own words “60% of blacks live in segregated areas” That means 40% of blacks live where?? That’s correct 4 x times more than whites and we know that not 100% of whites are above the poverty line and not all Live in major cites. It’s not a race issue, it’s a corruption & poverty issue. We as a country have changed the dynamics in SA a whole lot more than the picture that Vox paints. The saddest part is - We had the potential to have been in such a better place now 27years down the line.
FleshRebellion 11 घंटे पहले
@Copious I'm not sure what the sacrifices are, beyond common courtesy in day to day interactions (and still lots of racist talk behind the back). If you mean BEE and other business related measures, that's redress, and no way near the level of reparations needed. And anyway that's not up to individual white persons to "pay reparation", but white people need to collectively come to a place where there is genuine accountability. In my previous comment I mentioned "cultural reconciliation", I mean coming back to the table like the TRC could have been but wasn't. Now, no one person can do that, but I think "culture" is the individuals coming to some sort of agreement through continual dialogue. So, I think white people need to have the dialogue amongst themselves about apartheid, about race, about economic redress. I think this would be the starting point to begin building the trust that wasn't built during the TRC years. I suspect you're a business owner, by reading between the lines? If so, I can sort of imagine what you mean by "sacrifices" in your context, which must be doubly frustrating seeing how the.ANC just loots away the money. When I say that it's not enough for redressing centuries of colonial looting, that is not up to you individually to pay back; I assume you're doing your bit monetarily. But i think it comes back to white people collectively dialoguing and then using that to pressure whoever should be held accountable. Is it de Klerk? Vlok? Is it the big cat capitalists? Is it overseas corps? Is money what's needed? Is it a collective statement? A monument of atonement? I don't know, you individually won't fully know either. I just am not seeing that cultural process, that collective dialogue, among white people, instead it's a whole lot of shirking and defensiveness. I don't know where this kind of process might lead to, but the continual poor electoral performance of the DA is, to me, exhibit A that white people hasn't earned the trust back. (sorry if I'm.repeating a point, can't quite remember.) Disregarding the incompetence and bad actors in the ANC, still the white people need to address history properly before they can make a meaningful impact again. (Not sure what your point is.about Israel and Palestine, my broad response is that the mechanisms of colonialism came out of a specific moment in European history where a racist frame came to be the way white people saw the rest of the world. So, no, SA is not unique, but the dynamics of how it plays out are specific to each place. )
Copious 12 घंटे पहले
@FleshRebellion Okay, I thought we could have productive argument. Never the less , I do agree 100% with you. I won’t get personal , but you need to be honest and also agree that this situation is not unique to SA? It’s al over even the current Gaza situation will fit you’re narrative. What I’m trying to say is- that although it’s still not 100% perfect SA is by far the country in te world that has walk the reconciliation road the furthest. The USA is today where SA was in the 70’ties - they have along road ahead. The White population in SA has made great sacrifices thus far in our journey - but its never acknowledged.
FleshRebellion 12 घंटे पहले
@Copious will always be skewed? Or ... excused away? Look, I'm not defending the ANC government (in fact I'm F***** mad at the situation), but it's also possible to hold both apartheid and ANC accountable. We're talking about centuries of looting here. BEE, affirmative action, that will address a fraction of the problem but I simply didn't see enough of an economic or cultural reconciliation in the early days of democracy. SA needed a very speedy broadening of economic base where the majority of the population is participating, but whites and overseas corps held (and still hold) much of the big bucks. The window of opportunity was squandered and now the rot has set in.
Copious 13 घंटे पहले
@FleshRebellion Touché- We will always come back to “The percentage of a race at what income “ but let’s be honest if a race makes up 7 % of a population the figure will always be skew. The base of the white race is so small that it makes the argument hollow. The most important question should be, has the percentage of blacks getting out of poverty increased or reduced ? It has definitely increased right. White population is around 5million ( whole of SA around 57million) Vox focused on Cape Town a majority white and colored city in the past and used that to base the stage of segregation of a country? We have an awful past, that’s inexcusable. But using apartheid as a scapegoat to explain why SA is still segregated is a joke. We have Black Economical Empowerment In Sport & Business - anything that could be connected to an income. White immigration at around 200k a year. You need to ask yourself . In a country where you are penalized as a business for employing white people -why are you still seeing this phenomenon? Please go and watch this Video : “Life of the super rich in Central Africa” at around 17minutes you will have a answer as to the segregation in the Congo (or for RSA).
