Why you can't compare Covid-19 vaccines

What a vaccine's "efficacy rate" actually means.
Sign up for our newsletter: www.vox.com/video-newsletter
In the US, the first two available Covid-19 vaccines were the ones from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna. Both vaccines have very high "efficacy rates," of around 95%. But the third vaccine introduced in the US, from Johnson & Johnson, has a considerably lower efficacy rate: just 66%.
Look at those numbers next to each other, and it's natural to conclude that one of them is considerably worse. Why settle for 66% when you can have 95%? But that isn't the right way to understand a vaccine's efficacy rate, or even to understand what a vaccine does. And public health experts say that if you really want to know which vaccine is the best one, efficacy isn't actually the most important number at all.

Still, the point is that vaccines don't protect you against a virus, but only strains of the virus. This is true of the flu shot. It's true of COVID. You have the potential for a lower likelihood of having the virus, but ONLY if it's the strain in the vaccine.

It's a J&J video to defend It's version because it's the lowest efficacy. Why wasn't it tested in the US is probably because they wouldn't pass the stricter guidelines and they could cheat lie elsewhere. Just like people are judged by their history so should companies. J&J history is shady big-time.

There is no such thing as a cure... The only reason you want a vaccine is so that you hope to not have as harsh of symptoms... It doesn't make you immune.. Nor does it keep you from spreading it to others so I would enjoy it if you actually looked up what a vaccine does and doesn't do before you act like its a CURE... which doesn't and has never existed ever.

Can someone explain if I am not understanding this, but... isn't it inhumane to give people the placebo and lead them to their deaths?
Tomás Iriarte
Tomás Iriarte 14 घंटे पहले
They sign a contract where they accept that they may be receiving the placebo instead from the vaccine. All vaccines need to go through a testing process, and people offer themselves voluntarily to participate in this process, accepting that they may or may not get vaccinated if they decide to participate. Remember that this placebo thing is only for the testing phase.

It's not all true about efficacy and infection relationship. I am from india I can see atleast 4 people who get inflected and unfortunately died after getting vaccinated like 2 dose + 20 days They taken Astra Zenica vaccine. So either we need to update the vaccine as per new strain or need to rethink about efficacy rate.

Here's my question - when they did the J&J trials, why DIDN'T they redo the Pfizzer and Moderna trials for contrast? In fact, why not use them instead of the placebo? You'd still get a comparative result, but you wouldn't be sending half your patients off at greater than necessary risk.

Yes, take any shot you can. Having said that, isn't the efficacy of Pfizer still quite higher than J&J even against variants? Like 70%-90% in tests. (which is no reason to not take it, just pointing that out)

well illustrated and well said.. I would like someone to show me the proof how effective these vaccines are! Did you know that COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers define “effectiveness” as “reduction in risk of symptoms such as a fever, cough or sore throat?” Heck, on the CDC’s own website, they state “There is some evidence that vaccination may make illness less severe.” The term “effective” was not defined as preventing viral infection or spread of the (SARS-CoV-2) virus to others. This is the reason why vaccinated individuals are still recommended to wear facemasks, socially distance and avoid large crowds.

Really all are still new vaccines 6 month and under they have been used not counting the trials and the Astra Zeneca one proves the trials can’t tell you everything. 0 deaths in trials of them yet now there has been a few deaths caused by it. Still far less risk than the virus itself so it is still being used but in U.K. and maybe other countries it’s only being used in older people to balance the risk of the virus. I’ve been lucky. Got called to get vaccine end of February which could have been the Astra Zeneca or Pfizer I’m under 40 and healthy so no idea why I was put so high up to get vaccine and got the Pfizer. Only days before my 2nd dose yesterday U.K. decides anyone under 40 should get a different vaccine to the Astra Zeneca. So I should have got Pfizer which I did but at time I could have ended up getting Astra Zeneca.

Just shut up. You can't tell me why I can't compare them, when research shows that some vaccines don't even contain the deactivated form of the virus in it. How do you inoculate people without putting the agent you wish to build immunity against in the vaccine? You are all playing with humans. No longer tho.

@Beatern Plays You're right that the three US Vaccines plus some abroad (AstraZeneca, J&J, Pfizer, and Moderna) don't use a weakened COVID virus - weakened COVID virus particles are used in vaccines like the Sinopharm shot. The mRNA (Pfizer/Moderna) and Adenovirus vector (Astrazenenca/J&J) do cause the body to produce the spike protein, but these are precisely what's needed to get an immune response! Instead of your body's cells recognizing the protein on the weakened COVID virus, they can use the spike protein produced from the mRNA or adenoviral vectors. Both create immunity and "clue in" your body's immune cells for future antibody and killer-T cell immune responses (As an analogy: if you saw a photo of an apple versus a whole real apple, you'd still recognize it. The important part is that all vaccines eventually induce an immune response)
Beatern Plays
Beatern Plays 2 दिन पहले
@Dimeo Hi, I'd like that too. Thanks for dropping in, hope you're doing well :) Through my research about this, supposedly the vaccine has some sort of protein of the virus but not the virus itself. The info suggested it could possibly cause a reverse effect of building immunity. Rather fooling the immune system to fight itself. We can go more in depth in some chat service if that's a thing. I am curious to speak with you and share experience Hear from you soon :)

What you say does make sense. The point of vaccines is to create anti-bodies. If you have had the virus and fully recovered, you have the anti-bodies. Bear in mind that you produce anti-bodies for that particular variant of the virus you contracted. The same as the vaccines do. Do the anti-bodies work on all, some, or none of the variants? research is continuing in that area. From a medical standpoint, if you can verify you have anti-bodies, with at least the same loading as that given by the vaccines, you don't need a vaccine. We also do not know how long anti-bodies last with absolute certainty. What is known, is that someone vaccinated 6 months ago, still has the anti-bodies. As do those that contracted the virus and produced their own ant-bodies. However i think this is a logistics/cost problem. Prior to being given a vaccine, everyone would need a test to show 100% that they have anti-bodies. To show 100% would entail laboratory analysis. Best case, with massive resources, this would take over 24 hours. The time and cost would be prohibitive. You could of course pay for your own anti-body test, just make sure it is accurate. One of the PCR type tests (There are 3), which tests for anti-bodies, is 85% accurate. Thats the long answer to your 2 questions. The short answer to the first question is Yes. The short answer to the second question is , potentially, Yes.

The argument that we cannot compare them because they were tested on different "covid waves" is not very logical. If one was tested in an environment that people had more exposure to the virus, both the placebo and vaccinated groups would have more positives, proportionally, which would keep the percentage balance the same, therefore, generating the same (or very close) efficacy rates. The argument that all vaccines are 100% protective to severe cases, that I agree.

@Dimeo sure, when I was 15 years old I was giving a flu vaccine and and about 3 to 4 weeks later I became paralyzed. I believe they called it GBS. I just understand why would anyone would rush to take something that hasn’t been fully tested and that’s been created in less than 3 months. Just because you don’t hear anything from the media doesn’t mean there’s the vaccine is safe to take. Personally, I would wait 2-3 years before taking this vaccine. Enough time to know the vaccine has gone through enough testing.
