Long-haul truckers were once country music’s heroes.

“Ah, breaker one-nine, this here’s the Rubber Duck. You got a copy on me, Pigpen? C’mon.” This jumble of words is the first line of the song “Convoy,” a #1 country hit from 1976 that tells an action-packed story from the perspective of a truck driver. Songwriters Chip Davis and Bill Fries filled “Convoy” with banter and lingo based on communications they heard between trucker drivers on CB radio during the 1973 oil crisis.
The epic orchestration and colorful and quotable lyrics made “Convoy” an unlikely hit - but the song actually tapped into a long history of country music that put the spotlight on the solitary lives of long-haul truck drivers. In the video above, Estelle Caswell breaks down the golden era of trucker country with country and folk music scholars Travis Stimeling and Nate Gibson.

It was interesting to hear the back story about the song Convoy. I remember the song well. I was 14 in 1976 and remember the truck convoys. My brother had a CB radio in his car in those days. He went on the become an over the road trucker for his career.

Not a good fit with the thesis about it being all about sad songs, but I feel like something's missing from the discussion of '60s trucker country if we don't bring up Del Reeves' "Looking at the World Through a Windshield".

My grandfather had 3 CW Mccall records that I listened to all the time when I was young. That's what basically inspired me to drive a truck. It's the best job I could ever have and I've listened to and memorized all those songs. Along with the Johnny Cash version of I've been everywhere.

Started driving truck in 1976. Those were good times. Don't drive professionally anymore but am stuck in the '70s with hot rods and classic rock and country.

How can this be a 13:25 minute video and not have any mention of Smokey and the Bandit, or the music from Jerry Reed. East Bound and Down is probably the most recognizable trucking song on the planet, albeit plenty years after.

I have owned this 45 since it was new. Part of what made trucking interesting was the sudden surge of interest in cb radio, which truckers used extensively. For awhile, everyone had a cb at home or in the car and it was like a local based chat room that covered up to fifteen miles.

Before trucking was deregulated an OTR driver made pretty decent money. They say that trucking was deregulated in 1980, the rates were no longer controlled by the ICC, but pretty much everything else is heavily regulated in trucking. Its tougher to make a middle class lifestyle from trucking in 2021. Everything from the the retail shelves is hauled by a truck, but the driver is likely to have less than 2 years experience and will probably quit driving as soon as they can find another job.

I'm surprised you guys didn't mention WWL, the last bastion of trucker radio that used to broadcast out of New Orleans Louisiana on the AM side. They played trucker music and took requests all night long.

CW McCall was actually a character they had made for a series of bread commercials. A lot of their early songs were lifted from those. Then the last new CW Mccall song was about a cannibal.

I’m so thankful to have grown up listening to old country music at such a young age in a new generation (I’m 25) Country music is not for everyone but the stories are about everyone. You’ll always be able to find that song that just reminds you of a time in your life. That’s what’s so great about it.

Back in the glory days of truckin when drivers looked out for each other and took pride in their work and their rig. Nowadays we got a bunch of steering wheel holders that don’t have a clue and show little respect for their fellow drivers. I still take pride in my job/ industry, and I’m one of the few that still has a CB in my rig. So anyway, keep the rubber side down and between the ditches and I’ll hopefully hear from ya later on ol channel 1-9.

As a long haul trucker this was a really neat video. These songs are all still really popular with truckers. Me and my group of other trucker friends on Discord will sometimes just sit around all night driving, and if we're lucky someone's home, shut down for the night or stuck in a dock and they'll set us up a playlist on the music bot of all of these songs. Most of us are under 30 and not even into country music (except me I grew up on it) but whether its our guy from Montreal QC, our guy from Hesperia CA, or our guy from Amana IA, we all know every one of these songs and will listen to them when we need a pick me up.

Back in the 70s I used to listen to a classical music radio station (NPR). One of the daily programs was hosted by someone who liked to teach music along with playing a particular piece. He was very popular. He had a lot of fans including from an ‘unusual’ group (unusual for classical music), they were long-haul truckers in Australia. His program was rebroadcast down-under over ABC (Australian Broadcast System). They must have wrote him fan letters (on pieces of paper!) because there wasn’t much in the way of e-mail or internet for that matter. Different time, different place.

i grew up in the midwest circa late 60's through the 1970's. trucker country music was everywhere. i hadn't thought about the social implications that created it and made it popular. it wasn't my favorite music of the day, but hey, if "convoy" was playing i sang right along. that was what was great about that particular period in popular music. you could turn on the radio and hear "convoy" followed by one of queen's hits, then led zeppelin, then the disco star wars theme, then marvin gaye, then the partridge family, then aretha franklin, then the rolling stones, and on and on. because of this, i have such eclectic tastes in music. and i am really grateful for this. it's more fun to like things than to not like things. it's all in what and how you've been exposed to something.

I love trucker country; it's easily my favorite firm of country. My handle when I was a kid was "Roadrunner", which was Kawasaki's marketing name for the old trail bike I had (and still have). Much like callsigns in the Air Force, you shouldn't get to choose your own handle.
