Long-haul truckers were once country music’s heroes.

“Ah, breaker one-nine, this here’s the Rubber Duck. You got a copy on me, Pigpen? C’mon.” This jumble of words is the first line of the song “Convoy,” a #1 country hit from 1976 that tells an action-packed story from the perspective of a truck driver. Songwriters Chip Davis and Bill Fries filled “Convoy” with banter and lingo based on communications they heard between trucker drivers on CB radio during the 1973 oil crisis.

The epic orchestration and colorful and quotable lyrics made “Convoy” an unlikely hit - but the song actually tapped into a long history of country music that put the spotlight on the solitary lives of long-haul truck drivers. In the video above, Estelle Caswell breaks down the golden era of trucker country with country and folk music scholars Travis Stimeling and Nate Gibson.

Can you imagine? They don't drink, they don't get divorced, they are usually good with money, and usually they are not familiar with the inside of a prison cell. It should make for very positive and uplifting song writing.

I knew some long haulers in Brazil who worked in the 70s driving into the Amazon on dirt roads. Long haulers were kept really away from their families for long periods - loosing a son on the road isn't about actually loosing the son on the road but about being on the road away from the son. Also, when a long hauler fully loaded enters a skid the driver can do very little to manage it - it's as if the asphalt had turned into clear ice.

Months ago my Co-worker got on the CB when we left the Yard and said "c'mon Rubber Ducky, let's go" , i figured he was talking to me so i just accepted the handle name without much thought. Fast forward to a month ago and i was wearing the name like a badge of honor- but then i found out about _Convoy_ and the Song it was based on, and i was smiling all the way back to the Yard! Now every time i get on the CB i always say _breaker breaker 1 - 9 this here the _*_Rubber Duck_*_ , anyone got a copy, _*_Come On_* 🎙️😃🚚

It’s so cool to see this. My grandpa was a trucker for 54 years and started driving in 1960 and retired in 2014 to health issues. He drove till the last day. I grew up being around trucking and all the old timers from that era in 60s and 70s and listened to those trucker song with my grandpa going up and down the highways in the upper Midwest (mainly Minnesota and Wisconsin). He told me all his stories from those years gone by and I think about him and the memories I have of him everyday. I think the one thing in the trucking industry today that is a problem is that there’s not a many of the old time truckers like my grandpa left. I love the songs and movies from that time. Awesome documentary on this topic. Keep that big truck between the lines and out of ditch 10-4

This type of music still continues, somewhat. "Papa Loved Mama" - 1992, Garth Brooks. A trucker finds out his wife has been cheating on him, returns and crashes his truck into the motel she's meeting her lover in, leaving his kids effectively orphaned.

I was born decades after the CB radio era but I wish they hadnt gone away. I think it would make things safer if vehicles on the highway had some kind of two way radio to communicate the way boats trains and airplanes do maybe even some kind of ground traffic control center that could monitor potential hazards in real time.

As a traveler who has been to 48 states for fun, trucker songs are the soundtrack of my life, even though I ain't on the job and don't drive a truck. As noted, before it was about train hopping. Country music is a story genre. It goes beyond the cliche of love songs. It talks of drifters, travelers, the pain and joy of a nomadic lifestyle. Americana in its truest form

I'm watching this and thinking to myself how nowadays truckers can at least benefit from podcasts and audiobooks instead of only typical radio ; I'm trying to imagine what kind of radio station back in the 70's would play the entire 'An American prayer' album by Jim Morrison which personally reminds me of spoken word poetry

I have owned this 45 since it was new. Part of what made trucking interesting was the sudden surge of interest in cb radio, which truckers used extensively. For awhile, everyone had a cb at home or in the car and it was like a local based chat room that covered up to fifteen miles.

Before trucking was deregulated an OTR driver made pretty decent money. They say that trucking was deregulated in 1980, the rates were no longer controlled by the ICC, but pretty much everything else is heavily regulated in trucking. Its tougher to make a middle class lifestyle from trucking in 2021. Everything from the the retail shelves is hauled by a truck, but the driver is likely to have less than 2 years experience and will probably quit driving as soon as they can find another job.

Back in the glory days of truckin when drivers looked out for each other and took pride in their work and their rig. Nowadays we got a bunch of steering wheel holders that don’t have a clue and show little respect for their fellow drivers. I still take pride in my job/ industry, and I’m one of the few that still has a CB in my rig. So anyway, keep the rubber side down and between the ditches and I’ll hopefully hear from ya later on ol channel 1-9.

As a long haul trucker this was a really neat video. These songs are all still really popular with truckers. Me and my group of other trucker friends on Discord will sometimes just sit around all night driving, and if we're lucky someone's home, shut down for the night or stuck in a dock and they'll set us up a playlist on the music bot of all of these songs. Most of us are under 30 and not even into country music (except me I grew up on it) but whether its our guy from Montreal QC, our guy from Hesperia CA, or our guy from Amana IA, we all know every one of these songs and will listen to them when we need a pick me up.
